Frequently Asked Questions:
Kids FAQ
Q “What age is appropriate for Martial Arts?”
We have programs for kids who are 5 years old to teenagers. And we even have programs for adults, too!
Q “Will Martial Arts make my child violent?”
Absolutely not! We don’t teach kids how to kick and punch so they can go down the street and beat up the neighbor’s kid. Instead, we teach kids self-defense as a tool for personal growth and development.
Kids will learn to treat others as they want to be treated. They learn to respect all living things – from their parents to pets. Often, kids who were violent before they joined our class changed, and became non-violent. So no, Martial Arts won’t make your child violent!
Q “What if my child is not athletic? Will he have a hard time?”
Often children who don’t find success in team sports come to Martial Arts and they love it! That’s because with Martial Arts you go at your own pace.
See, team sports actually harm the self-esteem of children who aren’t very athletic. When they don’t perform well, the other kids can be pretty nasty. And this can leave some serious scars on their self-esteem.
But with Martial Arts, they can’t let anyone down. Everyone goes at their own pace. Some kids learn quicker than others – but the children who advance quickly are not valued more than the kids who advance slowly.
Q “Will my child learn a talent that they can be proud of?”
Many children find pride in being able to do “cool” things like dancing, juggling, singing, playing an instrument, etc., etc., etc. But Tae Kwon Do is a very unique skill that they can’t wait to share with friends and family.
I’ve seen many kids enter talent shows, and show off their Martial Arts techniques. The crowd is blown away every time! There’s simply something fascinating and exciting about watching Martial Arts. And your child will take great pride in his/her abilities.
Q “Will my child get hurt?”
I’ve had children come to my program for years without ever obtaining a single injury. This is the case with most children. From proper gear to step-by-step instruction – we do everything in our power to ensure your child’s safety as our first priority.
Have children gotten injured in my Martial Arts class? Yes, some have. But the injuries were no different than those which kids who play other sports get.
And unlike other sports, your children will actually be safer outside of practice! Not only will they be able to defend themselves if necessary, our students have prevented major injuries outside of class because we’ve taught them how to fall properly.
Q “Will my child have fun? Will s/he want to stick with the program?”
“Hurry up! We’ll be late!” – How many times have you said this?
But with Martial Arts, something fascinating happens… Often the children are the ones yelling these things! They don’t want to be late, and they never want to miss a class. In fact, I know of many parents who use Martial Arts as an incentive to get chores done.
That’s because your child will have a ton of fun in our classes. They’ll laugh, smile, and get lots of high fives. Your child will constantly be setting and reaching goals so they’ll want to keep coming back for more.
Q: “Is Martial Arts just for boys? Or can my girl take Martial Arts too?”
Girls love Martial Arts just as much and get the same fulfillment out of it as boys do. Actually, in my many years of teaching, I’ve found that girls usually get more out of the program because it helps them become more confident and secure that they can protect themselves.
So you don’t have to worry about your little girl getting hurt, or feeling scared because she’ll be practicing with boys. In fact, the boys may even be the ones who are scared!
Adults FAQ
Q “Will I get hurt?”
Any physical activity can lead to injury – and Adult Martial Arts is no exception – but because we place such care in keeping you safe, we guide you through the perfect way to do each technique. That way you don’t do it in a way that harms your body.
We also show you how to stretch properly – reducing your chances for injury even more. And the best part… you get to go at your own pace! That way you don’t force your body to do anything it isn’t capable of.
Q “Will it be violent?”
It is important to know that Martial Arts does include some physical contact, but it is controlled and not for the purpose of hurting each other, only improving our techniques!
People who do Adult Martial Arts are never the ones to start fights. They’re the ones who do everything in their power to avoid fights because they know that de-escalation is the best self-defense. But if it does come down to it, you will know how to protect yourself.
So no, Adult Martial Arts is not violent.
Q “Do I have to be athletic or flexible or anything?”
Not at all! In fact, many of our students are people who just never liked any other sports. They were never athletic before joining this class.
Now, though, they’re in better shape than just about anyone else they know! They’re lean, fit, and feeling great. So if you’re not athletic already don’t worry, we’ll help you get there.
Q “Will I be the only adult with a bunch of kids?”
Lee Brothers is the best place to train with your family! Our classes are set up so that all ages of the same rank can come to the same class so you and your child can come together!
However, we will split up by age group once we actually start training. So you can rest assured your child is having fun in their age-appropriate class while you get a more rigorous training with other adults.
